In every city, there are places that feel like the heart of the community. For Irondale, the brand-new Irondale Public Library is shaping up to be just that—a place for stories, connection, and creativity.

The doors officially open Saturday, October 11, and we got a sneak peek at what’s waiting inside. Trust us—you’re going to want to check it out.

What’s Inside the New Library

Irondale’s first library opened back in 1973, and while it served us well for decades, this new space is something entirely different. It’s modern, welcoming, and designed with today’s Irondale in mind. Here’s just a sample of what you’ll find:

  • A kids’ area with a story nook and an interactive play kitchen
  • A calm reading lounge designed for adults
  • Private rooms available for studying, small meetings, or remote work
  • A secondhand book shop!
  • A heritage room celebrating Irondale’s past, with treasures from the original library
  • Versatile rooms for community use—including one set aside for hands-on crafts
  • A dedicated teen zone for hanging out and studying
  • A snack station with coffee and snacks
  • A spacious conference hall (with a kitchen for larger events)

As Associate Director Tamara Tackett put it:

“What excites me most is being able to say ‘yes’ when people ask for things like study rooms or vending. Before, we had to point them elsewhere. Now, Irondale has it all right here.”

How It Happened

This library didn’t just appear overnight—it’s the result of years of planning, persistence, and community support.

Library Director Del Wilson, who has served the Irondale library for nearly 50 years, credits Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. with sparking the idea:

“About four years ago, the mayor walked into a board meeting and said, ‘I think it’s time to build a new library.’ People literally cheered.”

The community agreed. When the time came to vote on a property tax to help fund the project, 75% of Irondale voters said yes. That kind of support says a lot about what this city values: knowledge, connection, and a place to gather.
